Summer is almost here, and that means it is prime travel season for the family! I am so excited to be able to get away for a few days with my son, so we can spend some time together before he is back in school again.
But traveling with a six year old is not always easy. That’s why I pulled together these 5 Target travel hacks for traveling with kids so we can survive the travel season together.
1. Pack ALL THE ACTIVITIES
You can never have too many different activities to keep the kids entertained, especially on long plane or car rides. I try my best to balance screen time, so I was sure to pack books, puzzles, coloring books, and crayons to keep my son entertained. I was surprised how much he enjoyed these activities. A stranger on our cruise even came up to me to tell me she was impressed that my son was doing “homework” by the pool.
2. Use Storage Bags for EVERYTHING
I packed my son’s favorite snacks in sandwich bags to take through the airport. It was a lifesaver as we were quickly changing planes and didn’t have time to stop for a full dinner. I also used quart sized storage bags to keep my son’s toys and electronic cables organized as well.
3. Pack Outfits in Gallon Storage Bags
My easy way to keep my son’s outfits organized is to lay them out and put them each into separate gallon sized storage bags. This makes it easy to grab an outfit and go. Plus it guarantees that he has the correct amount of socks, underwear, undershirts, etc.
4. Give Your Child Some Responsibilities
I laid out the items my son would be carrying onto the plane in his backpack, and I let him choose his favorite toys to add to the pile. Then I had him pack all the items into his bag himself. He was responsible for keeping up with the items, and it made him feel like he was a part of the packing and planning process.
5. Establish An Easy Communication Method
I bought a cool set of walkie-talkies (like these) so we could all communicate while in the airport and on the ship. This made life SO EASY, because I could keep in contact with him and my other family members, while also giving my son another opportunity for responsibility.
